The Physiological Benefits of Hugging

Could a hug a day keep the doctor away? The answer is "Yes"!  Besides the psychological benefits of a warm embrace, a hug can offer a host of benefits to your mind and body as well.

Research in pediatrics has demonstrated the numerous benefits of hugging and cuddling premature infants and developing children. From improved IQ and immune function, bonding, and boosting milk production in the mother, hugs can offer life-long benefits to a baby.

A hug offers more than a social exchange of affection. Research demonstrates the following physiological benefits of a healthy hug in adults as well:

  • Improved immune function
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Reduced stress and cortisol
  • Mood boost
  • Improved pain tolerance
Perhaps we should add hugs to a list of things we need to do for health and wellness!
